Russia intends to terminate the project
Russia, despite the threat of tougher US sanctions, intends to bring the construction project Nord Stream 2 to end.
“Of course, we will defend our interests,” Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian president, told reporters on December 4. When asked about specific measures to support the companies involved in the project, he replied: “I will refrain from commenting on specific nuances for well-known reasons.”
Due to US sanctions, Western companies withdrew their pipe-laying vessels from the project. Russia intends to use its own ships, which, however, are less equipped than Westerners and are forced to anchor during work. According to reports, as of December 5, the laying works of a 2.6-kilometer-long section of the pipeline will be able to resume.
Work should resume on Saturday
The operating company Nord Stream 2 AG has long had permission to do so from the Federal Office for Transport and Hydrography. The permit, however, expires at the end of the year. The company itself did not comment on the resumption of work.
Meanwhile, in Stralsund, the Bureau of Navigation and Navigation announced the resumption of pipe laying works from 5 December.
