Germany and France will propose sanctions against specific individuals believed to be guilty of poisoning Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny with a Novichok-type nerve agent.

“Russia has not provided a single credible explanation at this time,” German Foreign Ministers Heiko Maas and French Foreign Ministers Le Drian said of Navalny’s poisoning.

They said they would soon share sanctions proposals with their European partners against those responsible for poisoning the opposition politician.

“The proposals will be directed against people who are considered guilty of committing this crime and violating international norms, given their official functions, as well as the organization involved in the Novichok program,” they said.

The Navalny Poisoning: A Timeline of Events

  • On August 20, Navalny was returning to Moscow from Tomsk, during the flight he became ill, the plane urgently landed in Omsk. Navalny was hospitalized. Two days later, he was evacuated from Omsk to the German Charite clinic.
  • On September 4, it emerged that experts from the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the German Armed Forces in Munich found traces of a poisonous substance from the Novichok group in Navalny’s blood, urine and skin. The fact that the politician was poisoned by Novichok was also confirmed by other experts.
  • On September 10, Navalny came out of a coma.
  • On September 23, he was discharged from the Charite clinic. On September 25, the opposition press secretary, Kira Yarmysh, said that Navalny would remain in Germany until the end of the rehabilitation course.
  • On October 1, in an interview with the German newspaper Der Spiegel, Navalny said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was personally behind the attempt to poison him with Novichok. He also announced that he intends to return to Russia.
  • On October 6, experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed that Navalny was poisoned with a substance from the Novichok group.
