Germany’s former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has decided to sue the daily Bild, which published an interview with Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Wednesday.
It is reported in the “DW” edition.
Thus, in an interview with a German tabloid, a Russian politician called Schroeder “Putin’s errand boy” and said he received secret payments from Putin, although he admitted that he had no proof of this.
Schroeder said the hidden charges allegations are deliberately flawed, and because the Bild newspaper circulated the allegations without asking Schroeder for comment, the former chancellor is forced to go to court.
In the same interview, Navalny called on Europe to impose sanctions on cultural figures who support Putin but work in the West. In particular, they spoke of Valery Gergiev, who is the chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
“You are a very talented musician, but we will no longer allow you to enter the EU. You can enjoy the Putin regime in Russia.” This, in Navalny’s opinion, should be done in Europe with respect to a Russian musician.
“I am glad that he remembers Gergiev, he is a great example,” said the Russian opponent. “Those people need to be pressured.”
As noted, Valery Gergiev, artistic director and director of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, as well as chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, declined to comment in any way on Alexei Navalny’s statements and the article in the Bild newspaper. At the same time, DW received a comment from the cultural advisor of the Bavarian capital, Anton Bibl.
“Change starts with mutual understanding,” said Munich’s chief cultural official. “Therefore, we adhere to our previous position that we, as a democratic society, must not abandon dialogue. Even, and even especially regarding points of view, which we do not share. Freedom of opinion is the good. supreme, and includes the right of people to have a political position. As long as it remains within the framework of our laws, it should not be subject to sanctions. “
