On November 14, “Cherkasskie Mavpy” shook the basketball news space with the news of the expulsion of Alexander Kobets. The 24-year-old basketball player is suspected of manipulating the team’s results and participating in draws.

Alexander Kobets graduated from Mavp basketball school. The 24-year-old Novomoskovsk native moved to Cherkasy as a teenager. He spent most of his life in this city. He passed all stages of youth basketball, won the Ukrainian championships for his age, played for national teams of all categories. Kobets was the leader of all his teams and, together with Svyatoslav Mikhailyuk, he became the star student of the club.
Kobets has been in professional basketball since 2012. During this time, the young basketball player became the leader of the team. In 2018 he helped secure the first Ukrainian championship in the club’s history. In the 2017/18 season, Kobets was one of the team’s key players and became the sixth best player in the championship. Oleksandr also set a number of records: he is the best scorer in the history of Cherkasy Mavp (1880 points) and the record holder for the number of past seasons (8). In short, at 24 he has already become a local legend.

Kobets was considered one of the most promising Ukrainian players of his generation. As part of the 3×3 team, he won the European Championship bronze medal. Since 2018 he made his debut in the Ukraine team. In the same year he signed a contract with the Chicago Bulls, for whom he played in the NBA Summer League. And then he began his career at the Chicago farm club: “Capital City Go-Go.” For the Ukraine national team, he played several key EuroBasket national team matches and suffered a serious knee injury. It took him more than a year to recover. The operation and treatment of Kobets were paid for by the president of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine and the owner of “Cherkasy Mavp” Mikhail Brodsky.

What happened?
It took Kobets more than a year to receive treatment and rehabilitation. The player was taking shape in the United States, and the drums returned to Cherkasy Mavpy in the middle of the 2019/20 season, where he managed to play several games and was injured again. In the summer, the offensive defender continued his individual work in Cherkasy and later joined the camp of the Ukrainian team. The basketball player planned to continue his career in Europe, but due to the pandemic it was not possible to find a good option. As a result, “Cherkasski Mavpy” signed a contract with him.
In the new season, the Cherkasy team suffers injuries and numerous infections from the coronavirus. At the start of the season, there were only 8 basketball players. Among them, Kobets was leader and captain. The basketball player dragged the team behind him, set a season record (38 points). During the first month of the Super League, Kobets were among the most productive of the season (16.8 points per game), with Mavps scoring 1-9.
November 14 “Cherkasskie Mavpy” makes a strong statement: the club stops cooperating with Oleksandr Kobets.
“The club believes that the player, Alexander Kobets, participated in sports draws and manipulated the results of the games of the current basketball season. Considering the unacceptability, immorality and illegality of such actions, the club believes that it is impossible to continue relations with this basketball player. “Cherkasskie Mavpy” breaks the contract with A. Kobets. The club transmits all available information about the actions of O. Kobets to the Legal Relations Commission of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine and initiates the consideration of this case “, – said the club in a statement.
A strong statement that still needs to be proven. However, if you look at the latest Cherkasy results, questions arise. On October 31, Cherkasy Mavpy suffered a sensational loss to Budivelnik in a very strange match (68:73). In that game, those of Kiev played with six. Cherkasy’s team had a 5-point lead, but in the end they missed a ton of penalties and lost. Subsequently, there were defeats in equal matches “Odessa” and “Chemist”. And on November 12, the team scored its first victory. However, in the match against Nikolaev, the Cherkasians were ahead + 10-16 and strangely, in the last quarter, they missed a blast of madmen and allowed the rival to reduce the gap to a minimum. Alexander Kobets’ personality in basketball circles is controversial. A few years ago there were rumors that a basketball player was playing in draws, but this did not penetrate the public plane. It is also interesting that “Cherkasy Mavpy” publicly announced this situation. After all, Kobets is a favorite of the club owner, a star student, and a record holder. If everything is publicly announced, then probably there have already been some precedents within the club (“He is the type of person to be reckoned with.”, – Brodsky).
Now Mikhail Brodsky commented on this situation as follows:
“I loved this guy, these are all my kids, but the FBU will honestly fix it. We can present a statement to the police, there is a criminal article, but I will not. Whats Next?
“Cherkasy Mavpy” referred the case to the Legal Relations Commission of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine. In reality, now the club must prove the guilt of the basketball player. Given the publicity of the process, Kobtsu will be disqualified. Of course, you can appeal this decision. However, despite all attempts, it will be extremely difficult for Aleksandr Kobets to continue his career in Ukrainian basketball.
