The government decided to extract the remains of the animals to burn
Residents expressed concern about the possibility of contamination of drinking water sources with animal remains.
Danish authorities are exhuming four million minks that were slaughtered on fur farms and hastily buried in a military training ground in the west of the country after discovering cases of infection of these animals with a mutated strain of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. . Representatives of the country’s government announced it on Sunday, December 20.
Hundreds of “zombie minks”, as the local media called them, after the burial – as a consequence of the formation of gases during decomposition – began to rise from the ground.
This prompted complaints from local residents who expressed concern about the possibility of contamination of drinking water sources and the lake, which is officially allowed to swim. The latter is less than 200 meters from the landfill.
The remains of the animals will be burned
The government was supported by the country’s parliament, the Storting, and decided to remove the remains of the animals and then burn them, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food said.
However, work will not begin until May 2021, when the threat of COVID-19 infection in humans during exhumation will be reduced to zero.
Earlier, on November 4, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced that the authorities decided to destroy all mink on the country’s fur farms due to the discovery of animals infected with a mutated strain of the virus. According to Frederiksen, people can become infected with it and it also reduces the ability to form antibodies. In early November, 12 people with a mutated variant of the coronavirus were identified in North Jutland.
Denmark is the world’s largest supplier of mink fur. There were 1,139 mink farms in the country, containing between 15 and 17 million minks.
