Hackers have stolen information from the United States Department of the Treasury and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration of the United States Department of Commerce. They acted with the support of a foreign government, Reuters reports, citing three sources.
According to the agency, hackers can access the email traffic of these departments. They had access to the e-mail of the agents of the authorities for several months. In particular, the hackers managed to bypass Microsoft’s security and authentication tools.
“The US government has been informed of these reports and we are taking all necessary steps to identify and resolve any potential problems related to this situation,” said John Ullita, spokesman for the US National Security Council.
Three sources told the agency that there is concern in the US intelligence community that hackers who targeted these agencies would use a similar tool to infiltrate other government agencies.
The United States government is concerned about what happened. According to one of the Reuters sources, a meeting of the National Security Council on this matter was held at the White House on Saturday.
According to agency sources, the investigation is now at an early stage and includes a number of federal agencies, notably the FBI.
