Ukrainian pilots met US Air Force planes on the Polish border, escorted them to the coast of the Sea of Azov and back.

Boeing B-52 strategic bombers of the US Air Force entered Ukraine’s airspace for the first time. They were accompanied by Ukrainian fighters. This was announced on Friday, September 4, in the press service of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“The US strategic bombers accompany the fighters of the tactical aviation brigades of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Su-27 and MiG-29,” said the Ukrainian military department.

It is clarified that the bombers that took off from the Ferford air base in Great Britain flew over the territory of Europe to the eastern border of Poland, and then, accompanied by fighters of the Ukrainian Air Force, went to the coast of the Sea of Azov and they returned.

“The patrol is planned to achieve interaction between NATO countries and partners. Such cooperation in the field of collective security is likely to continue in the future,” the Defense Ministry emphasized.

The US Air Force B-52 strategic bombers are known to be capable of carrying nuclear weapons, including cruise missiles with nuclear warheads.

Typically, bombers are used for strategic strikes, air support, air suppression, and offensive naval and anti-aircraft operations. During Operation Desert Storm, the B-52s delivered 40% of all weapons dropped by the coalition forces.

It was previously reported that NATO has resumed funding for the disposal of unusable ammunition in Ukraine from a special NATO trust fund.
