The farmer found himself in difficult financial circumstances, having received no intelligible responses from the authorities regarding compensation for the lost crop.
In the Kiliysky district of the Odessa region, the farmer killed himself as he lost the entire crop due to severe drought in the region. This was announced on Monday, May 11 in his video message by Kiliya OTG chief Pavel Boychenko.
According to him, 66-year-old farmer Vasily Serdyuchenko committed suicide, who was unable to survive the fact that his entire crop was destroyed by drought.
The deceased due to the loss of the harvest had serious financial difficulties. He, like many other farmers, borrowed money to pay the rent for land and crops, and this year he lost his entire harvest and therefore the means of subsistence and debt repayment.
“He was a middle-aged farmer. His farm cultivated 150 hectares of land, the so-called actions. He, like hundreds of other farms in Bessarabia, lost 100% of the crops. This is a huge financial loss, as the company borrowed a serious financial resource. Think about it: I only needed to allocate around 900 thousand hryvnias for actions, ”Boychenko said.
In addition, the OTG chief said the City Council appealed to authorities with a request to financially assist farmers.
“This is serious money, which is needed today as financial compensation for losses due to an emergency. For the second consecutive year, the loss of crops, and this year an unprecedented drought, put people on the brink of despair, “he added.
According to Boychenko, a month later, government officials did not respond if they would provide the necessary financial assistance.
