History of the Feast of Exaltation on September 27
The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is one of the 12 main festivals among Orthodox Christians.
As you know, the Lord was crucified on the cross. The apostles preserved it. Years after the incident, they began searching for the cross. And they found it, in 326. The marvelous split. One was sent to Constantinople and its fate is not yet known with certainty. And the second part remained on Mount Calvary. In other words, the essence of today’s holiday is the acquisition of the cross.
The name of the festival is associated with the customs of the church. In the churches in the most conspicuous place, in the houses of the believers, a cross is raised (erected) on their heads. And under it divine services are performed and people pray, ask and appreciate, cry and rejoice.
Popular omens and what not to do at the Exaltation on September 27
On the Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord on September 27, there are two most important customs prohibitions.
First, believers try to keep a strict fast. Food of animal origin, including fish, meat, eggs, milk, and dairy products are not allowed. Our ancestors said that fasting today frees from sins. And its absence – adds sins to a person.
We remind you: sick people, the elderly, pregnant women and young children cannot observe a strict fast. For them, eating food of animal origin is not considered a sin.
Secondly, on this day it is forbidden to go to the forest, fields and plantations. It is believed that by September 27, the snakes are already preparing to hibernate, and therefore, during walks in the forest, you can find them in large groups. This is bad both from a physical security point of view and according to popular customs: those who come across a kublo of snakes cannot avoid problems in the future.
Of course, other prohibitions also apply. Among them: you can not fight, scold loved ones, think badly of people. You should also refrain from household chores: in the garden and orchard, no sewing or knitting.
On September 27, it is recommended to attend a temple service or pray on your own. Today’s prayers are considered particularly powerful and are listed below.
There are different popular weather signs on the Exaltation. The main ones are:
- if today is clear then winter will be late this year,
- if birds fly to hot lands, expect a cold and harsh winter,
- If there is a strong cold snap in the morning, spring will come early.
On this day, our ancestors harvested cabbage for the winter. After that, the girls organized a kind of party. Before them, it was customary to wash with water and make a conspiracy to attract a guy:
“As water is pure, so love (man’s name) will be strong for me forever. My word is strong. So be it.”
