MEPs approved a resolution on Thursday 17 September in which they refused to recognize Alexander Lukashenko as president of Belarus at the end of the current term and demanded tough sanctions against Minsk, as well as against Russian citizens who “supported Lukashenko,” it reports. TASS.
The text of the document says that the European Parliament rejects the results of the elections held in Belarus on August 9 and does not recognize Alexander Lukashenko as president after the expiration of his current mandate. Furthermore, the resolution contains an appeal to the EU Council to impose comprehensive sanctions against all Belarusians guilty of electoral fraud, violence and repression in Belarus; study the possibility of including Russian citizens directly involved in supporting the Lukashenka regime in Belarus.
The resolution notes that the European Parliament supports the people of Belarus and their calls for free and fair elections. The document calls for the immediate release of political prisoners and all those who have been arbitrarily detained and are now in custody, as well as an independent investigation of all cases of torture and deaths related to the protests.
In addition, the European Parliament recognized the Coordination Council of the Belarus opposition as the “temporary representative of the people” of the country and called on the EU institutions to assist it.
The document calls for the abandonment of financial support to the Belarusian regime, including loans through the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, while at the same time supporting human rights defenders, activists and representatives. of civil society in Belarus. Furthermore, the resolution calls for the support of the country’s citizens seeking asylum in the EU.
At the same time, the resolutions of the European Parliament are of an advisory nature and are not mandatory.
