Borrell is ready to personally come to Minsk to negotiate with Lukashenko, but they don’t want to see him there.

The EU is aware of the historical, political and cultural ties between Belarus and Russia and hopes to harness the influence of the Kremlin in the official Minsk.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko refuses to dialogue with the European Union, so the Brussels official has to negotiate the Belarusian issue with the Russian Federation. This was announced on Tuesday, September 22, by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, during a visit to Kiev, the TASS news agency reported.

“They can help convince the Belarusian authorities to enter into dialogue with pro-democracy groups. I will continue to discuss these issues with the Russian authorities in the coming days and weeks,” he stressed.

According to Borrell, the EU is aware of the historical, political and cultural ties between Belarus and Russia.

“That is why, in my regular contacts with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, I emphasized the EU’s position of principle on respect for the sovereignty of Belarus: we are not imposing anything on anyone. I appealed to Russia to take the same position to avoid outside interference, “he said.

As previously reported, the foreign ministers of the EU countries in a meeting on September 21 could not agree on the sanctions lists of Belarusian officials responsible for falsifying the election results, as well as the use of violence against protesters.
