European Commission coordinates pandemic efforts
All Europeans should realize that a second wave of coronavirus is possible, said the representative of the European Commission.
EU Member States should prepare for the possible start of the second wave of spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. This was stated by the representative of the European Commission for Food Safety and Health, Stefan de Keyersmaker, according to Ukrinform on Monday, May 11.
According to him, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is now working on an analysis of the situation taking into account the possible second wave of COVID-19 and the measures to be taken in this regard.
“Based on the latest risk assessments carried out by ECDC, member countries should prepare for a possible second wave of infection and take every opportunity to strengthen the existing surveillance system,” said Stefan de Keersmaker.
He stressed that all EU citizens should understand: a new wave is possible, even if the initial infection is successfully overcome.
Stefan de Keersmacker noted that weekly health ministers from EU countries communicate with the profile of European Commissioner Stella Kyriakides through videoconferences and coordinate efforts to combat the pandemic, including exchanging information on the availability of equipment for personal protection and medical devices to help patients. This information, as well as the condition and congestion of existing medical facilities are evaluated, according to him, in terms of preparedness for a possible second wave of coronavirus.
Recall that during the day of May 10, almost 80 thousand cases of coronaviruses were detected in the world, 3,510 people died. In total, there are around 4.2 million infected people in the world, more than 283 thousand victims and almost 1.5 million recovered.
