The EU intends to seek new elections in Belarus of President Alexander Lukashenko, Borrell said

Following the departure of Alexander Lukashenko, the European Union is ready to allocate 53 million euros to Belarus instead of the 4 billion euros requested by the Belarusian opposition.

The European Union’s response to the situation in Belarus will consist of four steps. This was announced on Wednesday, September 23, by the European publication Pravda, citing the head of the EU diplomatic service, Josep Borrell.

According to him, this position was agreed by the EU foreign ministers during their last meeting.

Borrell recalls that the EU does not recognize the results of the presidential elections in Belarus and considers Alexander Lukashenko an illegitimate president.

“In our opinion, political dialogue and new elections, which must be free and fair, are the only way out of the situation,” he stressed.

In order to compel the incumbent President of Belarus to comply with these requirements, the EU intends to impose sanctions on Belarusian officials involved in holding the presidential elections in the country and suppressing protests.

The sanctions include an assets freeze in the EU, a ban on funding from EU countries and a ban on entry to the European Union. “We will continue to review this list of 40 names on an ongoing basis, taking into account the development of events,” said the EU chief of diplomacy.

The second step called for EU support for the initiative to establish a national dialogue, with the participation of OSBE and the Coordination Council of the opposition of Belarus.

The third step will be a complete review of the EU’s relations with Belarus and preparation for all possible scenarios. The emphasis will be on cooperation with foreign-funded civil society, “independent” media and student exchanges.

The fourth step will be the allocation of $ 53 million in support for legal, medical and other assistance to the Belarusian people.

Earlier, a member of the Presidium of the Belarusian Opposition Coordinating Council, Pavel Latushko, said that the Belarusian opposition expects funds from the European Union in the amount of up to 4 billion euros if it comes to power.
