The EU considers the punishment for lying in statements insufficient

The law passed by parliament, which restores liability for inaccurate income statements, is not a sufficient step, according to the European Union.

The decision of the Verkhovna Rada, which returned the responsibility to officials for lying in the statements, is an insufficient step in the situation that arose after the scandalous decision of the Constitutional Court. This was stated by the EU Ambassador, Matti Maasikas, during an online debate, reports on Wednesday, December 9 in Evropeyskaya Pravda.

“The EU has clearly expressed its position on the law that was passed by the Verkhovna Rada to restore liability for false declarations of assets. We recognized that this is a step in response to the decision of the Constitutional Court, but it is not sufficient to restore the deterrent effect of the declaration system in the fight against corruption and needs to be improved “, – said Maasikas.

The EU position, recalled by the ambassador, was made public the day before in the European Commission statement after an online meeting with representatives of the Ukrainian government, which, among other things, spoke about the need to resolve the situation that arose in relation to with the decision of the Constitutional Court.

The statement also noted that the EU stands ready to help Ukraine find a way out of the situation.

We will recall, on December 4, the Verkhovna Rada, 289 votes, supported the bill on the renewal of responsibility for inaccurate income statements by officials.

In turn, the EU said that the penalties provided for inaccurate income statements could be tougher.
