Ukraine’s ban on the export of all untreated wood is inconsistent with the Association Agreement, Europe decided
This arbitration decision ends the EU’s first trade dispute under a bilateral agreement, the European Commission said.
The European Union won an arbitration with Ukraine to ban the export of roundwood. Now, the Ukrainian side should soon lift the ban adopted in 2015, according to the European Commission website.
“The final decision of the dispute resolution commission established under the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement revealed that Ukraine’s ban on the export of all raw wood is inconsistent with the Association Agreement. Therefore, it is expected Ukraine to end the export ban as soon as possible. ” the decision completes the EU’s first trade dispute under a bilateral agreement, “the statement said.
At the same time, it is specified that the EU supports Ukraine with various projects, including support for environmental protection, as well as public administration and sustainable forest management.
It is clear from the arbitration decision that Ukraine’s ban on exporting raw timber “does not correspond to any of these legitimate objectives”.
Earlier, the Ministry of Economy said that Ukraine-EU arbitration on roundwood has entered an active phase. On January 28, 2020, an arbitration panel was established to consider this dispute.
Also this week it was reported that the Cabinet of Ministers approved a draft resolution, strictly limiting logging on the slopes of the mountains of the Carpathian region. Therefore, the government wants to preserve the fir and beech forests of the Carpathians.
