Erdogan on US sanctions: this is an attack on Turkey's sovereignty

Erdogan is confident that US sanctions will not stop Turkey

Turkey will work twice as hard to make its defense industry even more independent, Erdogan said.

The US sanctions on Russian S-400 air defense systems are an attack on Turkey’s sovereign rights and are incompatible with its allies. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this, RIA Novosti reported on Wednesday, December 16.

“Yesterday the EU threatened to impose sanctions against us, then the United States … Until today, CAATSA has not applied to anyone except us, the NATO countries. What is this alliance? What is this alliance? What is the basis? Turkey bought the S-400 from the Russian Federation. And did Turkey not ask for an air defense system? This decision is an attack on our sovereignty, a means of pressure on us, “said Erdogan, speaking in Ankara.

He noted that Turkey has repeatedly proposed to the United States to create a working group to resolve the contradictions about the S-400.

“After yesterday’s decision, we will now work twice as hard to increase our own production in the defense industry. We have long passed the day when such sanctions hampered us,” the Turkish leader added.

Recall that on December 14, the United States imposed sanctions against Turkey for the purchase of Russian S-400 systems. The restrictions apply to Turkey’s defense industry secretariat and its boss Ismail Demir. This is the CAATSA, the law on countering the adversaries of the United States through sanctions.

US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said the United States will not tolerate major deals with the Russian defense and intelligence sector.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry called Washington’s actions unfair and called for a review of the sanctions decision.
