On the eve of the match of the third qualifying round of the Champions League between Kiev “Dynamo” and the Dutch AZ Alkmaar, which will take place at the NSC “Olimpiyskiy” on Tuesday 15 September, the head coach of the opponents of Kiev Arne groove He spoke about the team’s mood and preparations for the next match.
– How did the team take the news about the season stoppage in the championship and the Ajax title?
– In fact, there is no headline. The season was canceled after 25-26 games. The champion was not determined, which means that the title was not won. But despite this, the “tickets” for participation in the Champions League were distributed among the teams. We got the second best ticket and, in the end, we were forced to play the qualifying rounds, first against Victoria (Pilsen) and now against Dynamo Kiev.
– How did the team prepare for the new season, taking into account the new realities? Was there any innovation?
– We continue training, observing all security measures for COVID-19. Fortunately, our government allowed us to exercise social distancing on and off the field. After all team sports were allowed to train in the same way as before the pandemic, we began group work according to the usual pattern. We saw that players need time to get back to their physical level and we gave them that time. This also required additional follow-up. We specially planned preseason training with many good training partners to assess our strength and see what needs to be done to be ready for our first official match against Victoria Pilsen.
– How important is the Champions League for AZ in terms of finances and annual budget?
– Of course, it is very important because it can significantly increase the budget of the club.
– How did the team react to the results of the draw?
– We understood that at the stage of the third qualifying round of the Champions League, we would still get a strong team. Since we studied all three possible opponents, our reaction was quite calm. Some employees recalled the confrontation with the Dynamo Kiev in 2010 in the Europa League (2: 1 and 2: 0 in favor of the Dynamo). It was one of the first things that came to mind.
– What do you personally know about Dynamo?
– Now we have five days to prepare and study our opponent better. We must take advantage of these days because, in my opinion, we will play against a very strong team. Without a doubt, the Dynamo have a good team.
– Who can you highlight in the Dynamo lineup?
– We know one player well: Fran Sol. We met in matches with his former team Willem II and we know this is the guy who can feel the moment and score a goal, as he was one of the best scorers in the league with 14 goals.
– Does the factor of the own / foreign field matter in modern conditions?
– We understand that the qualifying phase consists of only one match and that this is an away match, of course, to the benefit of Dynamo Kiev, although there will be no fans in the stadium. Just as we know every inch of our field, the direction of the wind, our opponent will feel safer in his stadium.
– Have you seen the Dynamo vs Shakhtar game? What impression did the Kiev match make on you?
– Yes, we really watched the match, and the fact that Dynamo won the Super Cup is really impressive, given that Shakhtar were recently semi-finalists in the Europa League. This shows once again that Dynamo is a very powerful and strong opponent.
