The home match against Spanish Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 for Dynamo Kiev turned out to be so difficult (0: 2) that before the second leg at the Estadio de la Cerámica, even the head coach of the “blue and white” Mircea Lucescu did not hide that his team arrived in the Iberian Peninsula with prestige in mind. One way or another, but this certainly did not free the capital club from the need to adequately represent our country in the international arena, so the expectations of the fight remained positive.

The Romanian mentor tried to surprise his counterpart with the ambiguous decision to leave Gerson Rodríguez at the forefront of the attack from the first minutes. Apparently, Dynamo focused on the possible desire of the rivals to start escalating the situation from the first minutes, before which Kiev would provide speed in their counterattacks. On paper, this tactic sounds very promising, but its implementation tonight failed miserably.

“White-blue” lost too much positional fighting to the opponents, who, like the biorobots, instantly joined the game, as soon as free space appeared somewhere on the other side. Kievans tried to play from the first minutes on a collision course, but failed on the first serious counterattack. In the 13th minute, Chukweze’s serve from the right wing fell exactly on the head of Moreno, who closed from the center of the penalty area to the far corner.

It was a rare episode in which Villarreal fiercely attacked Buschan’s possession. The remaining snippets of the duel appeared to be held according to previously written programs. The “yellow submarine” ruined all the attacks of the fouled opponents near the center line, which seriously hampered the growth of the match pace, which they, for their part, did not even attempt to climb.

For the Spaniards it was enough to show the visibility of the pressure for the defense of the rivals, and then a matter of technique: Mikolenko in minute 36 interrupts the team with a pass from the left wing, and at the moment of the rebound, Parejo He already had a plan in mind about how he would connect Moreno into someone else’s penalty area. The forward hit the nearby one, with a serious rebound from Zabarny.

Lucescu announced his team’s intentions for a reason at the pre-match press conference. Little by little the Dynamo began to rotate, to which the rivals also joined, as soon as they realized that the guests no longer had the intention of waging a real fight for the result. As a result, in the second half we did not see any tactical decisions from both coaches, and the substitute players did not differ in the prohibitive level of motivation.

At the end of the match, Villarreal annoyed Buschan a couple of times, but Giorgi had four goals conceded in the series, so he managed to defend his goal even in the event of an accidental blow from Kendzera. The Dynamo passed the first half without shots on target, but in the second the situation improved only slightly. Asenho had no reason to seriously enter the game, so his forced appearance on the field that night was fully justified.

The final whistle of Swedish referee Andreas Ekberg sent Spanish Villarreal to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, and for Dynamo Kiev the international campaign came to an early end.
