In the first four years after the introduction of ID cards in Ukraine, 4.3 million citizens received them. In 2020, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov, around 1 million people received them.
More than 5 million Ukrainian citizens have already become ID card holders, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov said on the air of Savik Shuster’s Freedom of Expression program on Ukraine channel.
“The state is changing, but there are problems in government agencies. This requires a great idea and the support of the president to move faster. But more than 5 million Ukrainians have already received identification cards. With biometric passports, this already is more than 15 million Ukrainians. The address is developing very rapidly. “, – said Fedorov, responding to the comment that along with the biometric passport a certificate from the place of registration should be carried.
Identification cards were introduced in Ukraine since January 2016, to replace the paper passport of a citizen of Ukraine, model 1994, with a photo attached. The advantage of these cards is their increased security: they are almost impossible to counterfeit.
The Interior Ministry reported in January 2020 that the State Migration Service issued 4.3 million identification cards from 2016 to 2019, especially in 2019 (1.6 million).
In August 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the text of the bill, which proposes to gradually withdraw the passport in the form of a circulation book.
