The American company FireEye, specialized in cybersecurity, was subjected to a powerful cyberattack. Because of this, there are threats to Ukraine’s cyber security.
This is reported by the National Defense and Security Council.
Digital tools were found to have been stolen, with the help of which Red Team specialists discovered flaws in the security systems of other companies and governments. Among the stolen tools are scripts to automate the collection of target data, as well as frameworks similar to CobaltStrike and Metasploit, which are generally used to check the status of network protection and to simulate cyber attacks during cyber operations.
These tools can be used to interfere with networks and information systems, as well as cyber weapons under certain conditions.
According to FireEye, the nature of the attack indicates a high probability of participation of Russian special services in the cyberattack.
Ukraine’s NSDC takes into account the growing number of cyberattack incidents and believes that the level of cyber threats to Ukrainian information systems is growing, especially ahead of the New Year holidays and the future tightening of quarantine. Because of this, work is being done with authorities and critical infrastructure facilities on how to detect and counter stolen FireEye tools.
It was previously reported that Ukraine climbed four spots and was ranked 25th in the National Cybersecurity Index 2020. The rating was compiled by the Estonian Academy of Electronic Government.
In addition, recently, during a cyberattack on the server of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), access was obtained to documents related to the COVID-19 vaccine produced by BioNTech. The agency is in charge of certifying vaccines before use.
