Yanukovich’s defense claims that the fugitive former president did not participate in the annexation of Crimea.
Yanukovych’s guilt has not been proven and the Court of Appeal’s decision is exclusively political, says his lawyer.
The Kiev Court of Appeal has upheld the verdict of the Obolonsky District Court, which sentenced former fugitive president Viktor Yanukovych to 13 years in prison for high treason. This was announced on Friday, October 2, by Yanukovych’s lawyer, Vitaly Serdyuk.
In his view, Yanukovych’s guilt has not been proven and the appeal court’s decision is exclusively political, as is that of the trial court.
“Appeals will be made to the Supreme Court as soon as possible,” Serdyuk said. Yanukovych’s defense claims that the fugitive former president did not participate in the annexation of Crimea.
“It was Petro Poroshenko, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Alexander Turchinov and others who came to power as a result of the tragic events of 2014,” stressed the lawyer.
Recall that on May 25, the Pechersky District Court of Kiev again arrested former President Viktor Yanukovych in absentia, this time in the case of the executions on the Maidan from February 18 to 20, 2014.
