Counterfeit money is distributed in Ukraine. They are bought online and then sold through small stores. Most of the time, a 500 UAH banknote is counterfeited.

As OBOZREVATEL tells the advisor to the chairman of the board of one of the banks Vasily Nevmerzhitsky. On the Internet, you can find dozens of advertisements in which, for 20% of the face value, they are ready to sell from 10 thousand counterfeit hryvnia.

Counterfeits Spread in Ukraine: How the Scheme Works

Fake sellers more often they claim that their “money” is accepted by the terminals, and without special equipment, the “banknotes” cannot be distinguished from the real ones. Indeed, quality counterfeits are found, but rarely. Most often these are 500 UAH banknotes. Although most counterfeits are of poor quality, adds Elena Korobkova, executive director of the Independent Association of Ukrainian Banks.

“As a general rule, the quality of counterfeit banknotes is much worse than that of real ones. But sometimes it is quite difficult to recognize a counterfeit,” explains the expert. Banknotes up to 100 UAH are less often counterfeited – it is not profitable. The police occasionally “cover” counterfeiters who pack cash at home.

The fake manufacturers send them by the distributor, and create accounts in Telegram and publish information in specialized forums. So there are two channels:

  • money is sent by “new mail” (if the package is properly packed, they are not allowed to open and check);

  • or delivered by “treasures”… In this case, the merchandise is delivered to “treasurers” who hide it in the street and send the customer a map and description of the “cache”.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, the situation with counterfeit money has drastically deteriorated in Ukraine. Now counterfeits account for a fifth of the country’s shadow financial resources.

Previously, high-quality fake dollars appeared, which even special devices cannot always recognize. The management of the National Bank sent a message to the Ukrainian financial institutions describing the tricks used by the counterfeiters.
