Coronavac vaccine tests discontinued

Investigators are confident that the death is not related to participation in the trial, however, the trials were suspended for the time being.

In Brazil, one of the volunteers who participated in the Coronavac coronavirus vaccine trial died. After this, the tests were suspended, Bloomberg reports Tuesday, November 10.

“Testing of the Sinovac Biotech Ltd vaccine, called Coronavac, stopped in Brazil after the October 29 event, the Brazilian Health Agency said on Tuesday, without providing further details on what happened,” the report said.

It is noted that the study has been interrupted while the agency analyzes whether it should continue.

At São Paulo’s Butantan Institute, which partnered with Sinovac to produce the vaccine locally, he said in a statement that he was surprised by the decision and is investigating the details of what happened. Director Dimas Kovas said in a television interview that a volunteer died during the trial, but that the death was not related to the vaccine.

In turn, Sinovac is confident in the safety of its vaccine. The company said that the head of the Butantan Institute had assured it that the event that caused the suspension of the trial was not related to the vaccine.

By the way, this is not the first case of its kind. In late October, a volunteer who participated in a trial of the COVID-19 coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford died in Brazil. The scientists who conducted the trials said the drug trials would continue despite the death of the volunteer.
