US President Donald Trump has said that the United States of America intends to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. From 1975 to 1991, there was a war for the independence of this region of Western Sahara.

On his decision on Western Sahara Trump reported on Twitter.

“Morocco recognized the United States in 1777. Now is the time for us to recognize its sovereignty over Western Sahara,” the US president wrote.

Note that the war in Western Sahara began in the context of the struggle for independence from the Polisario front. First, the front fought for the independence of the region from Spain, and then from Morocco and Mauritania. The war ended in 1991 with the signing of an armistice on the condition of a referendum on the independence of Western Sahara, but due to various difficulties it was not carried out to this day.

In the fall of 2020, the conflict in Western Sahara escalated. In November, the Polisario Front announced its withdrawal from the armistice agreement and became more active in Moroccan-controlled territory.

Recall that Trump announced the decision on Western Sahara after Israel and Morocco agreed to establish diplomatic relations. The recognition of Western Sahara became part of the tripartite agreements.

Also RBC-Ukraine wrote about the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Bahrain.
