The head of the Mejlis, Refat Chubarov, said that in the text of the strategy for the unemployment and reintegration of Crimea, it was proposed to define the status of the peninsula as “national-territorial autonomy within the Crimean peninsula.”
Several fundamental proposals of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people were not included in the strategy of unemployment and reintegration of Crimea annexed by Russia, which was approved by the National Defense and Security Council of Ukraine (NSDC). The head of the Mejlis, Refat Chubarov, wrote about this on Facebook on March 11.
Representatives of the Mejlis participated in the discussion of the initial text of the public part of the strategy. In particular, they proposed to include in this strategy the protection and application of the inalienable right to self-determination of the Crimean Tatar people as part of a sovereign and independent Ukraine.
It was proposed to include in the text a definition of the status of Crimea, which would be “national-territorial autonomy within the Crimean peninsula on the basis of the realization by the Crimean Tatar people as indigenous people of Ukraine of their right to autonomy -determination.”
“Our international partners will not yet find a clear answer to the question of what the status of Crimea will be after the restoration of Ukraine’s state sovereignty over the Crimean peninsula. And to what extent this status will provide state guarantees for the preservation and development of the Crimean Tatar indigenous people on their land, “Chubarov noted.
In simple words, NSDC Secretary Oleksiy Danilov said that Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers can take into account the proposals of the Mejlis when developing measures to implement this strategy.
“The President of Ukraine noted the timeliness and importance of the proposals made by Chubarov (semantic quote), and also proposed to work on their implementation together with the Ukrainian government and will organize all work on the implementation of this strategy,” the head of added the Mejlis.
At the same time, it is observed that some of the proposals and comments of the Mejlis were taken into account in the meeting of the Security and National Defense Council.
On March 11, the NSDC approved a draft strategy for the unemployment and reintegration of Crimea temporarily occupied by Russia. According to Danilov, this is “the first fundamental document since the occupation of the Crimean peninsula by the Russian Federation, which provides a clear guide on how we will advance in the matter of unemployment of Crimea”.
Crimea was occupied by Russia in the spring of 2014 after an illegal referendum. Ukraine and most of the countries of the world do not recognize the annexation of the peninsula to the Russian Federation. There is a regime of checkpoints on the administrative border between Crimea and mainland Ukraine.
The summit, to be held in Kiev on August 23, 2021, is scheduled to begin activities of the Crimean Platform, a new consultative and coordination format initiated by Ukraine to increase the effectiveness of the international response to the occupation of Crimea, as well as adopt a document called the Crimean Charter, which will condemn Russia’s policy towards occupied Crimea.
