UK launches world’s first mass vaccination against COVID-19
Pfizer / BioNTech will be the first to receive the vaccine for nursing home residents and hospice workers. People over 80 and health workers are also a priority.
The UK is the first in the world to initiate mass vaccination against the coronavirus. It was reported by CNN on Tuesday, December 8.
The vaccines will start with the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine. The process is complicated by the need to store this vaccine at -70 degrees and give each patient two doses three weeks apart.
Residents of England, Wales and Scotland will receive the first doses of the vaccine. At the same time, Northern Ireland announced that it would begin the introduction of the vaccine at the beginning of the week, but did not specify on what day. First, nursing home residents and hospice workers will receive the vaccine. In addition, people over 80 years of age and health personnel are a priority for vaccination.
In turn, UK health officials expect up to 4 million doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine by the end of December, which provides up to 95% protection against COVID-19. So far, the country has purchased 40 million doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, which is enough to vaccinate 20 million people or one third of the country’s population.
We will recall that previously the WHO opposed forced vaccination with COVID. The countries of the world must work to increase confidence in vaccination, stressed the organization.
