In the UK, a new strain of coronavirus VUI-202012/01 was discovered, which may be even more dangerous than the previous one. In this sense, in the southeastern part of the United Kingdom, including London, the quarantine of the fourth, that is, the highest level, has been declared since December 20.

Shortly after the British Prime Minister, the heads of government of Wales and Scotland announced the introduction of strict quarantine measures. The entry and exit of Scotland, where the number of cases of infection by the new variant of the virus has reached 17, is prohibited during the Christmas period.
In Wales, Christmas celebrations are canceled, a blockade is being introduced across its territory, Prime Minister Mark Drakeford said after a meeting with experts on the development of the situation with a new variant of the coronavirus.
The new strain of coronavirus is known as VUI-202012/01. According to Boris Johnson, it can be much more dangerous than the variant known to scientists.
“It may be 70% more infectious than the previous version,” the prime minister said, adding that this is preliminary information and that the new version of the virus is still under investigation.
British government pandemic advisers say there is no indication that the new strain increases deaths from Covid-19 or affects the vaccination process. However, the new strain of the virus is spreading unusually fast: if in November it was the cause of 28% of all cases of coronavirus infection in London, in December this figure already reached 60%.
Previously, British law provided for three levels of restrictions. The third, which is currently in force, was introduced with “a very high epidemiological danger.”
Thus, now, all the indulgences that the authorities promised to the British for Christmas are canceled, people are asked to spend as much time as possible at home, all stores are closed, except grocery stores and pharmacies.
Residents of different households can communicate only one to one and on the street. That is, they cannot celebrate Christmas with more than one family.
“I know what emotions people relate to at this time of year. I know how disappointing it will be,” said the British prime minister.
The fourth level of restrictions will be introduced for two weeks, until December 30.
