The crash of the Indonesian airline Sriwijaya Air’s Boeing 737-500, which fell into the Java Sea on January 9 shortly after takeoff from Jakarta, may have been caused by a malfunction of the engine control system.
And also an attempt by the crew to fix the problem, writes the Wall Street Journal. The publication cites information from sources familiar with the plane crash investigation.
They refer to a study of the “black box” records. It turned out that the plane had a fault in the automatic throttle of one of the two engines, which controls various flight parameters.
At the same time, the pilots, according to the sources, deviated from the instructions and, instead of shutting down the system, they tried to restore it to work. It is assumed that this could cause an imbalance in the load of the aircraft engines and complicate their control.
It is emphasized that the Boeing 737-500 can fly safely even with a running engine, and the pilots of such aircraft are trained to act in such situations.
