The Electoral College with its vote confirmed the victory of Joe Biden in the presidential elections of the United States.
The American elections have finally come to an end. Members of the Electoral College, representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia, gathered to cast their votes as directed by state voters: 306 votes to the 270 needed to win for Biden, 232 for Donald Trump.
Usually this stage of voting plays a purely formal role, but this year it has become more significant due to Donald Trump’s reluctance to admit defeat in the election and his numerous attempts to appeal the results of the vote.
There were no surprises, but Trump still refused to accept the election results.
How they voted
All the key states – Nevada, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin, where Trump waited until the end to turn the outcome in his favor – voted for Biden. All votes were cast as planned; no state had so-called “desperate voters” who voted differently than the state’s voters were ordered to.
At the same time, in Michigan, where voters reported the threats they were receiving, authorities closed all state legislature buildings. In Georgia, the office of the State Assembly was guarded by reinforced police units.
In addition, in several states, the authorities decided to classify the voting places of the voters, and the delegates were brought to the meeting accompanied by law enforcement officers.
In Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin, Trump voters who would have been delegates to vote in the Electoral College had he won the states still met separately to symbolically vote for Trump. From a legal point of view, this doesn’t change anything.
In Arizona, where Biden won, a group of Trump supporters even tried to forge electoral protocol. The fake document, which awarded 11 state votes to the incumbent president, was notarized and mailed to Washington. But the authors of the bogus protocol were found pretty quickly.
The next formal step in the electoral process is the counting of votes in Congress, which will take place on January 6.
A group of Republican congressmen from the House of Representatives, loyal to Trump, are about to question results in key states in a congressional meeting when the results of the vote are approved, but at this stage it no longer matters.
Biden reaction
Biden, after the Electoral College vote, declared the victory of democracy and called the country to unity.
“The flame of democracy has long been lit in this nation. And we know that nothing, not even a pandemic or abuse of power, can extinguish it … In this fight for the soul of America, democracy has won. The people voted. Faith in our institutions has survived. The elections did not suffer. Now is the time to turn the page, unite and heal, “he stressed.
As CNN noted, this speech was the harshest of all of Biden’s previous criticisms of the actions of Donald Trump and his campaign in an attempt to turn the voting results in his favor. He noted that “the country has never seen such decisive attempts.”
Biden recalled all the lawsuits and also recalled that the recount, where it took place, did not significantly change the results.
Separately, Biden noted that he won with the same distribution of votes as Donald Trump in 2016, noting that both then and now it is a “clear victory.”
Putin congratulated for the first time
Following the electoral college vote, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory telegram to Joe Biden on the occasion of his victory in the US presidential election.
In the telegram, Putin wished the president-elect much success and expressed his confidence that Russia and the United States, which have a special responsibility for global security and stability, can, despite their differences, really contribute to solving many of the problems. and challenges facing the world now.
Many world leaders immediately congratulated Biden on winning the election, but the Kremlin refused to do so until the official results were summarized.
And Trump?
On the eve of the Electoral College vote, Donald Trump continued to denounce alleged electoral fraud, calling them “the most corrupt in the history of the United States.”
Contrary to expectations, Trump has yet to comment on the election results.
According to US media sources, the current president was in the Oval Office all day, having telephone conversations with advisers and representatives of the Republican Party in Congress. Sometimes Trump would walk into the next room, where he closely followed the voting progress.
Over the weekend, he gave an interview to Fox News, where he once again stated that he did not intend to stop the fight, did not admit defeat.
“I am concerned that this country has an illegitimate president. There will be a president who lost. He lost very seriously,” Trump said.
President Stephen Miller’s senior adviser also talks about the upcoming fight:
“There is only one date in the constitution: January 20 (inauguration day). So we have more than enough time to correct the incorrect results of the fraudulent elections.”
