On Saturday February 20, in Slovenian Pokljuka, the women’s relay race took place as part of the 2021 Biathlon World Championships.
The Ukraine team, which was represented by Anastasia Merkushina, Yulia Dzhima, Daria Blashko and Elena Pidgrushna, won the bronze medal.
For almost the entire race, the Ukrainian women were among the leaders, combining good speed on the track with optimal shooting accuracy (7 spare rounds).
Elena Pidgrushnaya reached the last shootout alongside Martha Roiseland of Norway and fought for gold, but two penalties did not allow the reigning world champions to compete for gold.
On the last lap, Pidgrushnaya was third, two seconds behind Germany’s Franziska Preuss. The captain of the Ukraine women’s team quickly caught up with her rival and tried to break away from her on the rise, but the fight for silver didn’t end there.
In the final streak, the agile Preuss managed to bypass Pidhrushnaya and defended the title of vice world champion. The Ukrainians won bronze for the third year in a row.
It is worth noting that the podium has not changed at all compared to last year. And there was only one change in the Ukrainian team: in the third stage, Vita Semerenko was replaced by Daria Blashko.
Race results:
1. Norway (0 + 11) 1: 10: 39.0
two. Germany (0 + 5) +8.8
3. Ukraine (0 + 7) +9.2
Four. Belarus (0 + 8) +28.8
5. Sweden (0 + 9) +47.9
6. Poland (0 + 6) +52.1
