Cyprus has once again blocked the European Union sanctions project against the regime of Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, reports the dpa agency, citing a source in diplomatic circles.
According to the European diplomat, the Cyprus representative used his veto in an attempt to secure the imposition of sanctions against Turkey for illegal drilling activities in the disputed waters of the eastern Mediterranean, writes DW.
“This step by Nicosia protects the Lukashenka regime from the consequences of its undemocratic and oppressive actions,” the diplomat said on condition of anonymity.
At the same time, the French Secretary of State for European Affairs, Clement Bon, supported Cyprus’s position on the issue of sanctions against Ankara.
Remember that The European Parliament passes a resolution on Belarus with a call for harsh sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko, his security apparatus and the Russians who are directly involved in supporting the dictatorial regime.
For the sixth week in Belarus, massive protests against the Alexander Lukashenko regime, which has ruled the country since 1994, have harshly repressed the opposition and independent media.
Anti-government protests broke out after the presidential elections on August 9. Belarusian protesters believe that the election results are falsified and demand the resignation of Alexander Lukashenko.
The Belarusian dictator rejected any concessions and attempts at dialogue with protesters and the opposition, repeatedly claiming that Belarus’ western neighbors were behind the wave of protests.
