In accordance with the order of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the village of Madagiz, which until today was under the control of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, was renamed Sugovushan.
On October 3, the Azerbaijani armed forces occupied the Madagiz settlement, which after the start of the Karabakh conflict was controlled by the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. This was reported by the press service of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.
“Ilham Aliyev congratulated the commander of the 1st Army Corps Hikmet Hasanov on the occasion of the liberation from the occupation of Madagiz. He instructed him to convey the congratulations of the Supreme Commander in Chief to all the personnel of the corps, “the message reads.
President Aliyev set on Twitter who decided to change the town’s name.
“I am restoring the historical name of Madagiz from October 3, 2020. From now on, it is Sugovushan,” he wrote.
The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported that on the morning of October 2, Azerbaijani troops had established control over the dominant heights around Madagiz.
In 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh, with the support of Armenia, declared its independence from Azerbaijan. This led to hostilities that lasted until 1994. The armed conflict ended with the signing of the Bishkek Protocol on Armistice and Ceasefire, but from time to time armed clashes broke out between the parties. During the conflict, more than 30 thousand people died in the region. Azerbaijan considers Nagorno-Karabakh as a territory occupied by Armenia.
On September 27, 2020, the largest conflict in recent years broke out in the region. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry accused Armenia of “large-scale provocation”, bombardment of Azerbaijani army positions and announced the beginning of a “swift counteroffensive”. The Armenian authorities, in turn, declared that the Azerbaijani army had launched an offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh. During the conflict, the parties used tanks, heavy artillery and aircraft.
On October 3, Armenia announced that Azerbaijan during the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh launched a large-scale offensive, which the self-defense groups of the unrecognized republic managed to stop.
