The Australian government has decided to change the words of the country’s national anthem as of January 1, 2021. The words will disappear from the text. «we are young” (We are young) so that the hymn more accurately reflects the history of the indigenous population.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said this on New Year’s Eve, the BBC reports. According to him, such changes will strengthen «spirit of unity ”of Australians.
The government removed the reference to the “youth” of the country to take into account the history of the Aborigines and the surrounding islands, which are tens of thousands of years old. So instead of the line because we’re young and free (“Because we are young and free”) people will sing Because we are one and free (“Because we are one and free”).
Morrison noted that such a change takes nothing away from the anthem, “but adds a lot.” He added that while the history of the modern Australian nation may be relatively young, the true history of the country is ancient.
«Our national history is based on more than 300 national ethnic and linguistic groups, and we are a successful multicultural nation on earth, ”said the Prime Minister.
