The emergency services are already putting the total number of houses damaged in “hundreds”. The downpour will continue for several more days.

Heavy rains off the east coast of Australia started the worst flooding in 50 years. It was reported by Interfax-Ukraine on Sunday March 21.

New South Wales Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklyan said the situation was worse than initially expected.

“Yesterday we expected such an event to occur only once every 20 years, and now it seems like an event that occurs once every 50 years,” Berezhiklyan said at a briefing.

People in some parts of the city of Sydney were advised to leave their homes in the middle of the night, as rapid streams of water caused massive destruction. Some 1,000 people requested evacuation assistance, and some 4,000 more, according to Beredzhiklyan, could be forced to leave their homes. The emergency services are already putting the total number of houses damaged in “hundreds”.

Several major highways across the state are closed and many schools have canceled classes Monday.

Forecasters said the downpour will continue for several more days. Emergency brigades have logged nearly 6,000 calls for help since the rain began Thursday, including nearly 700 direct calls for rescue.

Extreme weather conditions have affected COVID-19 vaccine delivery throughout New South Wales. Plans to give the first doses to nearly 6 million people have been discontinued in the next few weeks.

Previously in Hawaii, flooding destroyed houses and bridges. The dam was also damaged. About 1,300 houses were without power.
