Ukraine’s head coach Andriy Shevchenko spoke about his relationship with the national team’s players.
“If you want to understand a generation, start communicating with them, build relationships. Find common ground. I do this all the time. And I’m really interested in them. I try to understand them, I’m good at it.”
When before the game with Serbia (5: 0) we arrived in Lviv and evaluated the level of training of the players, the coaching staff was confident. But an emotional speech is never prepared. I felt like I had to give the guys some energy, confidence, to light a spark.
I saw how much they were in tune, but felt something was missing. I had to add a bit. Yes, I am strict. I like discipline. Maybe someone will be late, yes. You need to understand if it was forced or if the person decided it was not that important to him.
I look at many things differently, but it is important for me to nurture the atmosphere in the team. So that it works constantly as a living organism, it progresses, so that there are no internal poisons to destroy it. As a head coach, I have to follow this.
The most important thing in these 4-5 years is that I established discipline requirements. And players will see how I meet these requirements myself. During 4-5 years of my job I have never been late. It was always the first. I think the players respect him. The most important thing is personal example. When you show yourself what you demand, you will be treated with respect.
Second, I set a clear task and one that they can tackle. I do not demand from a footballer what he cannot give to the team or to me as a coach. I always dose the requirements correctly.
If there are comments, the boy tries to do it, we will be fine. But if I see that for some reason he can do it, but he doesn’t, we won’t have a future, I always give a chance. Not one or two. Maybe it’s psychology, some kind of isolation, you don’t feel relaxed. If you don’t take several opportunities, it will be difficult to come back later, “Shevchenko said.
