Zaporozhye “Motor” in the group stage of the Champions League defeated “Zagreb” with a score of 24:23.
The first half of the match was developed in an equal fight, which in the end was reflected in the result of the first 30 minutes. The hosts of the site were in the lead for a long time, and the maximum difference in their favor reached three goals. However, the charges of Gintaras Savukinas quickly leveled the advantage of their rivals.
And five minutes before the break, the residents of Zagreb had to catch up. However, the Cossacks failed to increase the score gap. We observed several offensive losses of guests. In particular, one of them was admitted by numerical majority, and the Cossacks were wrong in a quick counterattack. According to the results of the first half, Dmitry Goriga became the best sniper of “Motor”, who hit the opposite goal four times.
Shortly after the start of the second half of the match, “Motor” had problems: Zakhar Denisov received a red card for a violent play on the opponent’s neck. The teams continued to face each other, but the Zaporozhye team held the lead on the scoreboard.
When the score was 19:21, the guests couldn’t hit the opponents’ goal for a long time. And thanks to confident play on the “frame” of Ivan Moroz, as well as Maxim Vyunik, who twice reflected opponents’ 7-meter throws, the Croats failed to match the result.
Two minutes before the end of the match, the Cossacks kept the difference “+2”. The “Zagreb” coaching staff took a time out, after which Moroz made another stop. After that, the question about the winner of the showdown was practically eliminated. The Croats were still able to reduce the score to a minimum, but they had no more time left.
The victory in Zagreb significantly improved Motor’s chances in the fight for the Champions League playoffs. In a week the teams will meet again, already in Zaporozhye.
