The Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom law firm paid the former Prime Minister of Ukraine and her lawyer $ 11 million, NYT writes.
The law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom paid $ 11 million to the former Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko and her lawyer to avoid prosecution on her part. On Sunday, May 10, The New York Times reported, citing sources.
According to the publication, in 2018 Tymoshenko during an interview indicated that the New York law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in 2012 “whitewashed the activities of (former President of Ukraine Viktor) Yanukovych and his government.”
She said the company did this in exchange for a fee. Tymoshenko, along with his lawyer Sergei Vlasenko, soon hired the law firm Reid Collins & Tsai to try to find out if Skadden can be sued.
According to NYT, Skadden paid $ 11 million, or slightly more, to settle the matter before the lawsuit was filed.
It should be noted that the funds were received by Tymoshenko and Vlasenko through the company Reid Collins & Tsai. The newspaper notes that the statements presented by the lawyer and the former prime minister said that each of them received approximately $ 5.5 million, but Skadden was not mentioned in the notes.
Recall that in 2011 the Ukrainian government hired the company Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom to assess the progress of the investigation in the Tymoshenko case.
The contract was signed with the help of Paul Manafort, the former head of Donald Trump’s campaign headquarters. The compiled report became part of the public relations campaign in the American media, although Skadden was not registered as a foreign agent.
Skadden was subsequently accused of representing Ukraine without registering as a foreign agent. In January 2019, the company reached an agreement with the authorities, under which it promised to pay more than $ 4.6 million.
