Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced the capture of the last section of the border with Iran, which was previously controlled by the forces of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that during the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, the armed forces of Azerbaijan gained control of the border with Iran.

“With the liberation of the Agbend settlement, full control over the state border of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran was secured. I congratulate the people of Azerbaijan and Iran on this occasion”, – wrote Aliyev on Twitter.



He too famousthat the Azerbaijani army today took control of 21 settlements in Nagorno-Karabakh.



Aliyev publishes daily on his account lists of settlements in Karabakh, which are under the control of Azerbaijan.

In 1991 Nagorno-Karabakh with the support of Armenia declared its independence from Azerbaijan. This led to hostilities that lasted until 1994. The armed conflict ended with the signing of the Bishkek Protocol on an armistice and a ceasefire, but from time to time armed clashes broke out between the parties. During the conflict, more than 30 thousand people died in the region. Azerbaijan considers Nagorno-Karabakh as a territory occupied by Armenia.

On September 27, 2020, the biggest conflict in recent years broke out in Nagorno-Karabakh. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry accused Armenia of “large-scale provocation”, bombardment of the Azerbaijani army positions and announced the beginning of a “swift counteroffensive”. The Armenian authorities, in turn, declared that the Azerbaijani army had launched an offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh. During the conflict, the parties used tanks, heavy artillery and aircraft.

Deaths and injuries reported military personnel and civilians.

Martial law was introduced both in Armenia and in certain regions of Azerbaijan. Both countries involved in the conflict announced mobilization.

On September 30, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the transfer of militants from Syria and Libya to Nagorno-Karabakh.

On October 9, during the negotiations in Moscow, the representatives of Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed to a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh starting at 12:00 on October 10. However, after the start of the truce, both parties accused each other of breaking it. Subsequently, Aliyev reported several times on the capture of settlements in Nagorno-Karabakh under the control of Baku.
