Acropolis of Athens in the snow

In Greece, a very unusual cold climate was established for this country: under the influence of Cyclone Medea, a large amount of snow fell.

Southern Europe is covered in snow, Greece is particularly affected. In some cities of the country, the air temperature dropped to 20 degrees below zero.

The snowfall caused interruptions in transport work throughout the country, making it necessary to partially interrupt the vaccination of the population against the coronavirus.

The sharp drop in temperature has killed at least three people and heaters, sleeping bags and blankets have been sent to Greek refugee camps.

But photographers are happy when it will still be possible to photograph the ancient Acropolis in the snow.

Correspondent.net collected information on how Greece is fighting bad weather.

Athens stopped

Roads were blocked in the capital of Greece, public transport was disrupted. Ferries transporting people to the Greek islands have partially stopped working.

“This is a very heavy snowfall, we have not seen this in many years,” said the scientific director of the National Observatory of Athens, Costas Lagouvardos.

The central streets of Athens had more or less time to clear of snow, but the narrow avenues and streets were mostly impassable.

Due to the abundance of snow, several subway lines have even been suspended, where important sections of the street are located. Furthermore, most of the tram and trolleybus routes were not working: the rails were often blocked by downed trees or large branches, and the cables were cut.

Without eleectricity

Thousands of homes in dozens of municipalities were left without electricity.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged local residents not to leave their homes. “The biggest concern is the power grid,” he said during an emergency government meeting. “We need patience to solve this problem, something really exceptional is happening.”

Police received nearly 250 calls from people who were locked in their homes and cars.

A state of emergency has been declared in the municipality of Dionissos, in northern Attica. 10 emergency services and military groups were dispatched to the region.

There are advantages

The media publishes picturesque photos of Athens covered in snow and snowmen molded by local residents.
