The Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has named the cause of the emergency at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant. STUK has already informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
This is indicated in a message on the IAEA website.
How informed STUK, the cause of the emergency, which led to the emergency shutdown of the second power unit of the nuclear power plant, was a malfunction of the water purification system to cool the reactor.
“Due to a malfunction, a part of the filter material entered the cooling system, which caused a temporary increase in the level of radiation in the steam lines,” explained the Finnish department.
STUK also assured the IAEA that yesterday’s event does not pose a threat to the safety of people or the environment. Radiation levels in and around the nuclear power plant are at normal levels.
Remember yesterday at noon STUK has received information about the emergency at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant. As a result of the accident, the second power unit was urgently shut down. The radiation readings were normal.
