On the final matchday, Inter took advantage of Milan’s sensational loss to La Spezia and beat Stefano Pioli’s team in qualifying. Thus, the Milan derby, in addition to its adherence to principles, attracted attention with enormous tournament value. A true “game for six points”, as they say. And given that the teams fight for the Scudetto, the intrigue before their head-to-head showdown was insane. Once again, we regret that there was another exciting match with no fans in the stands.
The first scoring chance of the game ended in trouble for the Rossoneri. Lukaku fled to the free zone on the right wing, but his cross to the goalkeeper did not work. The ball bounced towards the Belgian, who made a perfect cross to Martinez’s head, who had no difficulty in shooting over the goalkeeper.
Such a development of events markedly discouraged the nominal owners, and the “neradzuri”, on the contrary, were inspired by the advantage gained and actively continued on the offensive. Lukaku was about to double the lead when he couldn’t get the ball into the goal after a cross from the wing. He could have made a double for Martinez in the first half. After a strong punch from Perisic, Donnarumma hit the ball in front of him and the forward hit the ball over the goal. And before the half-time whistle, Shkrinyar missed an excellent opportunity, after a cross from the penalty spot, hitting a little higher than the door.
Milan’s players spent the second half of the first 45 minutes with more confidence. The most dangerous moment the Rossoneri managed to create was Hernández’s blow near the post.
The start of the second half was marked by the assault on Inter’s goal and the brilliant performance of Samir Handanovich, who became the true hero of this segment of the match. First, the goalkeeper reacted to Ibrahimovic’s header after a cross from a corner, and moments later he rescued his team, overcoming Ibra’s blow. A few seconds later, Handanovic jumped the ball out after being hit by Tonali.
“Nerazuri” slowed the pace, responding in cold blood to such activity from his rivals. And then the nominal guests carried out an exemplary counterattack, which ended with a cross from Perisic and an accurate shot from Martinez. This was not the end of Milan’s troubles. Lukaku ended his solo passage with a pool shot, practically eliminating the question of the winner of the showdown.
In the future, Pioli sentries tried to break the scoreboard, but were unable to do so. Handanovic was flawless in this match and made another save after hitting Rebić from outside the penalty area.
Inter have strengthened their position at the top of the table: now Antonio Conte’s team is four points ahead of Milan.
