An archaeological expedition discovered on the territory of the island of Khortitsa a unique burial of a Scythian warrior, whose age is about 2,500 years. This is indicated on the site of the Khortytsya reserve.
The burial was in an earthen catacomb about three meters deep, the entrance to the catacombs was lined with a large amount of heavy granite rocks.
The buried warrior, by ancient standards, was a giant: his height is about 1.8 meters. At the burial, archaeologists found a bone-handled iron knife, the remains of a quiver with bronze arrows, and sacrificial food.
“It is interesting that our ancestors built a cromlech over this burial in ancient times, a circle of granite stones, a symbol of the sun, which is known in the cultures of many ancient peoples,” says the reserve.
The reserve also recalled that 20 years ago, Scythian graves and altars had already been found in this place, in which household items, ancient dishes, jewelry and a bronze mirror were found.
Similar findings at Khortitsa indicate that the island was an important Scythian site, where a settlement was located, where ferries passed, and a place of trade with Greek merchants.
