The volcano began to erupt near the capital of Iceland. The sky over the city turned red. People are asked to stay home and not open the windows.

In Iceland, the Fagradalsfjall volcano began to erupt, which had not manifested itself for 900 years before. The volcano is 35 kilometers from the country’s capital Reykjavik, writes CNN.

According to local residents, the sky over the capital turned red.

The volcano woke up around 8:00 p.m. Kiev time. After a couple of hours of eruption, the lava covered an area of about one square kilometer.

“The eruption at this stage is considered small, and the length of the crack is about 500 meters. The magma area is about 1 square kilometer. The lava sources are small,” the Icelandic Meteorological Office said.

Iceland’s Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management advises people who live miles from a volcano to close their windows and stay indoors to avoid exposure to airborne volcanic gas.

Before that, it was reported that more than 50 thousand earthquakes have occurred in Iceland in recent weeks. Such unusual seismic activity indicates a possible volcanic eruption, the scientists said.

Earlier we wrote that the Etna volcano began to erupt again in Italy. He began to drop “volcanic bombs” and ash. Parts of the stones damaged cars in nearby towns and cities. The international airport was closed.
