Poland begins construction of the BalticPipe gas pipeline, which is supposed to connect the fields on the Norwegian shelf in the North Sea with Poland through Denmark, and will protect Ukraine from gas blackmail.

This was stated by President Andrzej Duda, reports from the European Truth.

According to Duda, on April 30, Gaz-System (the operator of the Polish gas pipeline network) signed a contract for the implementation of this project with Saipem Limited and the project received all necessary permits in Poland and Denmark.

“If we are talking about the complete diversification of gas supplies to Poland, if we are talking about the total independence of Poland as a recipient of Russia, then this is a milestone on the road to this independence,” he said.

The pipeline is scheduled to open on October 1, 2022, and its production will be 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Duda separately emphasized that this project is also part of a major collaboration within the Trimorie framework.

“Since we are building gas centers that will also allow gas to be delivered to neighboring countries, those who are creating together with us are implementing the Trimorye project, including Ukraine. It is very important that Poland is one of those guarantors of Ukraine’s energy security, which, as we know, has been subject to gas and energy blackmail by Russia for years. Therefore, this element is extremely important for the sovereignty and complete independence of Ukraine, ”he said.

It was previously reported that the Russian Federation is experiencing difficulties with the completion of Nord Stream-2 after the United States imposed sanctions against companies involved in the construction of the pipeline.

Nord Stream-2’s design capacity is 55 billion cubic meters per year. But according to recent reports, Germany intends to extend the EU gas directive to the Russian gas pipeline, despite Gazprom’s objections. This will mean that Gazprom cannot be the sole owner of the pipeline and gas pump: the company must be owned by an independent company from Gazprom, and Gazprom must provide at least 50% of the pumping capacity to other operators.

The Baltic Pipe project started almost 20 years ago. In the past 11 years, the Polish state-owned company PGNiG has acquired mining licenses on the Norwegian continental shelf to supply Baltic Pipe.

In early 2019, the EU supported the project by providing a grant for the construction of a gas pipeline in the amount of € 215 million, in addition to the € 51.8 million previously allocated.

Construction of a gas pipeline with a capacity of 10 billion cubic meters. m per year was planned for 2020, and its completion is expected in October 2022. This coincides with the end of Poland’s long-term contract with Gazprom.
