Dead cells remain from the coronavirus
Lung cells that are dead after recovering from illness can test positive when retested.
A repeated positive test for coronavirus in people considered to be cured is caused by dead lung cells, said Maria Van Kerchove, director of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) unit on new diseases.
According to her, in some patients after a negative reaction to COVID-19 in a week or two, or even later, the disease can be detected again.
“When the lungs recover, there are dead cells that during the test show a positive reaction. This does not indicate an infectious virus, this is not reinfection, this is not reactivation, it is actually part of the healing process. It is really interesting,” Van Kerkhove explained.
Furthermore, WHO experts do not yet know whether the presence of COVID-19 antibodies in the human body indicates immunity to a new disease.
“Does this mean they have strong protection against reinfection? And if so, how long does it last. We still don’t know the answer,” added the expert.
Recall, scientists rated a possible cause of “reinfection” of the coronavirus.
