The smartphone industry is experiencing the biggest drop

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the smartphone industry is experiencing the biggest recession in recent years. According to TrendForce analysts, the volume of smartphone production in the world in the first quarter of 2020 decreased by 10% and amounted to some 280 million devices. Experts say this is the steepest decline in the five-year period. The main reason for the regression is the failure of the supply chain in the context of a coronavirus outbreak.

In the second quarter, the production situation improved, but now the pandemic is negatively affecting the level of demand in the world’s largest markets. With this in mind, analysts predict a decline in smartphone production by 16.5% yoy and shipments within 287 million units. If the fears are realized, this will be the most significant drop in the second quarter of the industry’s history.

TrendForce’s adjusted estimate for 2020 as a whole states that smartphone production will decrease by 11.3% to 1.24 billion units.

Describing the current situation with the main smartphone brands, experts noted that almost all of them had negative dynamics in January-March. Thus, in January-March, Samsung’s smartphone production fell 9.9% yoy to 65.3 million units, taking into account the company’s market share of 23.3%. According to TrendForce forecasts, in April-June, Samsung expects a quarterly decrease of another 10.7%, to 58.3 million devices.

Second in the ranking of the main smartphone manufacturers was Huawei, which was able to compensate for the sharp reduction in sales abroad due to its domestic market. According to TrendForce estimates, in January-March, Huawei launched 46 million smartphones, or 16.4% of the world total. Analysts say that if the situation in the Chinese economy improves, in the second quarter, Huawei may increase smartphone production to 48 million.

The consequences of the pandemic significantly affected Apple. IPhone production in the initial quarter of 2020 decreased 8.7% to 37.9 million units, allowing Apple to take only third place on the TrendForce list. Thanks to the launch of the iPhone SE, the production of Apple smartphones in the second quarter will not change much and will be within 36 million devices. However, experts are concerned about the future prospects of the provider and warn that iPhone sales may suffer due to the high price of the devices.

Further on the list is the Chinese company Xiaomi, which in the last quarter launched 24.5 million smartphones (a 8.8% share), almost the same as a year ago. In the second quarter, an annual decrease of 10.7% is expected, to 27.5 million smartphones.

Oppo is in fifth place (24 million smartphones; -10.4%), and the Vivo rating has been closed (23 million; + 5.5%). The latter became the only brand on the list with positive dynamics.
