The new F1 World Championship kicked off with a spectacular race at Sakhir, which will be remembered for the strong showdown between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. Starting from pole, Max was in the lead in the first segment, but the world champions’ tactical headquarters were able to overtake their driver due to an earlier pit stop. However, in the end, Hamilton’s tires were worn and with great difficulty he stopped the young rival.
However, the outcome of the race could have been very different if Verstappen had not been hampered by technical problems. One of them, connected to the differential, mentioned “Bulls” boss Christian Horner immediately after the finish. But it turned out there was one more.
Helmut Marko spoke about the details of what happened in Bahrain in an exclusive interview with the German network publication related to Motorsport.com, Formel1.de.
“In qualifying, as you saw, Max drove too far on the curb and some parts flew off his car,” said the 77-year-old Austrian. – It affected the rhythm, but not very significantly. Lost about 8% of downforce.
But at the start of the race, he had much more serious problems in the differential area. In the first sector, the loss was very significant, around three tenths. Not just because the grip has deteriorated. The rear wheels began to skid and overheat from this. By the way, the same problem was with [Серхио] Perez.
Because of this, Max failed to create a sufficient gap in the first segment to stay ahead after a pit stop. On the contrary, your advantage [над Хэмилтоном] began to decrease, from 2.5 seconds to 1.7. This determined the further development of events, putting us at a disadvantage. “
Marco continued: “And a little later we had another problem: we had to reduce engine power due to the risk of overheating. But despite all this, Max had a very strong career. “
