In Ukraine, a modified strain of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus was discovered, which does not match the previously identified virus samples. This was reported by the chief epidemiologist of the Lviv region, Natalia Ivanchenko-Timko.

Two patients from Ukraine were diagnosed with a modified SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus strain. The chief epidemiologist of the Lviv region, the head of the Lviv regional laboratory center, Natalia Ivanchenko-Timko, announced this on March 19 on Channel 4 air.

The strain, according to their information, does not match previously identified virus samples. The samples were sent to the German laboratory “Charite”, they were taken from a resident of the Lviv region and a resident of the Lugansk region.

“We got the result that in some regions of Ukraine we identified a ‘British’ strain, in some regions of Ukraine we found other changes. And from a patient from the Lviv region and from a patient from the Lugansk region, that is, only two samples from Ukraine, other genetic changes in the coronavirus spike protein. This is a novelty, they do not belong to either the “British” or other known strains, “Ivanchenko-Timko said.

An outbreak of coronavirus infection began in late 2019 in China. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the spread of the coronavirus a pandemic.

The world knows the circulation of the “British”, “South African”, “Brazilian” and “Nigerian” strains of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. It was previously reported that eight cases of the “British” strain were recorded in Ukraine, in patients from the Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsia and Transcarpathian regions.

On March 19, Ukraine’s Health Minister Maxim Stepanov said that the “British” strain of the coronavirus had already been identified throughout Ukraine.

“And since it is three times more contagious, that is, more contagious, a tense situation awaits us with the incidence of COVID-19,” said the minister.
