The Ministry of Health has issued an order to modify the maximum levels of veterinary drug residues in foods of animal origin. However, the State Regulatory Service is preparing a project of denial by order: failure to comply will result in a de facto ban on the sale of poultry meat.
This was reported on the website of the European Business Association. “The document proposes that the poultry meat safety indicators conform to European standards. First of all, this is due to changes in the legislation on feed safety and hygiene. The project refers to the authorization to use medicinal feed additives for the prevention of coccidiosis, a disease that, without prevention, leads to the death of 80 to 90% of all young birds ”, – said in the message.
EBA member companies report that the draft order has already been approved by the Ministry of the Economy, as well as by the State Food Service. At the same time, the State Regulatory Service is preparing a project to deny this order.
The EBA sent a letter to the Ministry of Health and the State Regulatory Service with a request to support the proposed changes and avoid the ban on the use of feed additives for poultry feed in Ukraine. Keep in mind that poultry is one of the most affordable types of meat and belongs to social products. In Ukraine in 2019, 53.6 kg of meat was consumed per person, of which poultry was 26 kg or 49%.
At the same time, these feed additives are not harmful to humans, however, they are very important for growing poultry and are used throughout their life cycle up to 2-3 days before slaughter. This situation can lead to a loss of poultry, which, in turn, can lead to a sharp and uncontrollable rise in prices.
Let us remind you that the number of pigs is drastically decreasing in Ukraine. The key reason was the record low profitability of its crop. Today it is not profitable from an economic point of view to keep and raise animals, both in homes and in large companies.
