The investigative experiment in the case of Odessa activist Sergei Sternenko confirmed the testimony of the beating of the deputy of the Odessa Comintern district council Sergei Shcherbich, said criminologist Anna Malyar.

The forensic medical examination found numerous injuries on the deputy of the council of the Kominternovsky district of Odessa, Sergei Shcherbich, who was injured in the criminal proceedings against the activist Sergei Sternenko. This was announced on February 25 on the air of the television channel 1 + 1 by the criminal expert Anna Malyar.

“A torn nostril, traces of three traumatic weapon wounds, abrasions on the buttocks, and the fingers of one hand being pinched with tweezers. This was confirmed by a forensic medical examination. Then they took them away, ”he said.

The criminologist noted that in the course of the investigation into the Shcherbich kidnapping, the fact of a call from another person involved in the case, Ruslan Demchuk, was established.

“These three people were at the same time in the same place. The region where their mobile phones were – all this coincided. Now the question of participation. Four more people have not been identified. This is the question: why are they not identified and who is covering them ?! “- explained the painter.

Sternenko’s lawyer, Masi Nayem, responded that “all of the above does not prove his client’s involvement” in the crime.

On February 26, at a press conference, Sternenko’s attorneys emphasized that only one person allegedly witnessed the crime, but the prosecution refused to summon him to court, Babel reports.

Sternenko’s defense also finds that mobile data data is not accurate enough. According to the lawyers, no triangulation method was used, which would allow locating the phones with an error of several meters. The file contains only the phone billing, which only indicates that the Sternenko and Shcherbich phones used the same mobile communication base station.

The case, in which Sternenko appears, was investigated for several years. He and Demchuk were arrested, but later released on bail.

Sternenko denies any involvement in the incident. The activist wrote on Facebook on February 17, 2021 that the only evidence in the case is Shcherbich’s testimony. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the case also includes the inspection protocols at the scene of the incident and forensic examinations. Sternenko’s defense insisted that they were carried out with numerous violations. In particular, the investigators involved a witness in the investigative experiment, whose name was not mentioned and was not summoned to court hearings, Sternenko’s house was searched without the presence of a lawyer, and the examination of the noise gun, according to lawyers, it was carried out incorrectly, wrote Babel.

On February 23, Sternenko was found guilty in the kidnapping of the deputy of the Limansky district council of the “Trust Deeds” party Sergei Shcherbich. He was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison with the detention of half of his assets. Another defendant in the case, Demchuk, received the same term.

After Sternenko’s verdict, protests took place in various cities in Ukraine, notably in Odessa, Zhitomir and Kiev, under the Office of the President. In Bankova, the protests ended in clashes with law enforcement officials. Police detained 17 protesters, at least seven people were injured. 27 police officers and national guards received burns to their eyes.
